September 12, 2025 : A massive landslide struck Upper Rimbi in Yangthang Constituency, West Sikkim, around midnight, leaving four people dead and one critically injured.
Superintendent of Police Geyzing, Tshering Sherpa, informed that three victims died instantly when the landslide hit the settlement.
In a challenging rescue operation, police personnel, assisted by local villagers and SSB forces, evacuated two injured women by building a makeshift log bridge over the swollen Hume river.
Both survivors were rushed to the District Hospital; however, one of them succumbed to her injuries during treatment. The other remains in critical condition.
“The rugged terrain and adverse weather made the rescue extremely difficult, but with the community’s support, we managed to carry out the operation. It was risky, yet necessary to save lives,” SP Sherpa stated.
