IIM Shillong Students Explore Bamboo Crafts and Industries in Sikkim
A group of students from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong visited Sikkim from 3rd to 20th December 2024 in two batches to study the market prospects of bamboo crafts and industries in the state.
As part of their study, the students had an interactive session with the Secretary of Horticulture, senior officials from the department, and Mr. Phurba Tamang, a prominent bamboo entrepreneur from Sikkim associated with Namthang Bamboo Handicrafts, which has become a focus center for promoting bamboo based initiatives.
The meeting, held in the chamber of the Secretary of Horticulture, began with a warm welcome to the visiting students.
During the interaction, the Secretary provided a detailed briefing on bamboo cultivation practices in Sikkim, emphasizing the state’s rich diversity of bamboo species and their unique importance. He also elaborated on marketing strategies and opportunities for bamboo products, aiming to inspire the students to contribute innovative ideas for the growth of the sector.
The initiative underscores the growing interest in sustainable industries and showcases Sikkim’s potential as a hub for bamboo crafts and entrepreneurship.
