Minister Puran Kumar Gurung Reviews Mushroom Cultivation Progress

Pakyong, December 24 :

Mr Puran Kumar Gurung, Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), and Fisheries, undertook a formal inspection of the Mushroom Unit operated by the Department of Horticulture, Government of Sikkim, situated in Mahjitar today.

Accompanying him was a delegation that included Mr Ugen Lepcha, CA to the Chief Minister; Mr Suman Sharma, Principal Director of the Horticulture Department; Mr BL Dahal, Mission Director of the Horticulture Department; Mr Tshering Chophel Bhutia, Additional Director of Agriculture & Horticulture Department, Pakyong; along with other officials from the Agriculture & Horticulture Department.

The primary objective of this visit was to evaluate the current status and potential for the advancement of mushroom cultivation within the region.

Mr Puran Kumar Gurung, during the inspection, conveyed his commendation for the developmental progress observed at the mushroom unit, emphasising its pivotal role in bolstering agricultural diversification, augmenting farmers’ income, and endorsing eco-friendly farming methodologies.

He assured the delegation that the government remains committed to providing the requisite support to fortify the horticulture sector and to further cultivate mushroom production as a viable agricultural endeavour within the state.

During the occasion, the team engaged in discussions with local farmers and staff, assessed the existing facilities, and deliberated on strategies to enhance both production and quality, adhering to the government’s vision of promoting sustainable agricultural practices along with empowering farmers, nurturing innovation within the agricultural sector, and striving for self-sufficiency across diverse crops, including high-value horticultural products.
