Sikkim Legislative Assembly Delegation Attends Commonwealth Parliamentary Events in Barbados

Barbados, October 9:
A delegation from the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, led by Hon’ble Speaker Shri Mingma Norbu Sherpa and Hon’ble Deputy Speaker Smt. Raj Kumari Thapa, participated in a series of meetings and sessions during the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Barbados. The delegation also included the Secretary and Principal Director of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat.

On October 8, 2025, the team attended a briefing meeting for the Indian delegation, convened by Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri Om Birla, at the Tiffany Room, Ross University, Bridgetown.

Subsequently, Shri Mingma Norbu Sherpa and the Secretary of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly attended the CPA Small Branches Steering Committee Meeting, which deliberated on several key agendas including reports from the previous meeting, membership matters, and the implementation work plan for 2026. The committee also elected Mr. Adrian Gabriel of Guernsey (British Island and Mediterranean Region) as Vice Chairperson of the CPA Small Branches for a second term.

Meanwhile, Smt. Raj Kumari Thapa and the Principal Director joined the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Conference Session on “Overcoming the Barriers to the Involvement of Women with Disabilities in Politics” held at the Frangipani Room, Ross University. The Secretary General of the CPA also briefed delegates on the structure and sessions of the 68th CPC and associated workshops.

The Hon’ble Speaker and Deputy Speaker later participated in the workshop on “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide,” chaired by Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri Om Birla.

The day’s programme concluded with a reception at the Courtyard of the Parliament of Barbados, hosted by Hon’ble Santia J.O. Bradshaw, M.P., Acting Prime Minister of Barbados.
