Honouring Tribal Legacy: IEC Campaign on Dharti Aaba DA-JGUA Observed in Pakyong

Pakyong, November 15

: An IEC Campaign under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA) was organised by the Social Welfare Department, Pakyong, on the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Dharti Aaba Bhagwan Birsa Munda, at the DDMA Control Hall, Pakyong.

The programme was attended by Panchayat President, Mr HB Gurung; Sr Superintendent of Police, Pakyong, Ms Paru Ruchal; ADC Pakyong, Mr Sangay Gyatso Bhutia; SDM (HQ) Pakyong, Mr Thendup Lepcha; District Information Officer Pakyong, Ms Deeki D Bhutia and Social Welfare Officer, Ms Sunita Dahal.

Addressing the gathering, ADC Pakyong highlighted Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s role as a reformer and social activist whose life was dedicated to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and identity of tribal communities. He reflected on Birsa Munda’s contributions, emphasising that programmes like this serve as a meaningful way to commemorate his legacy, his efforts for social upliftment and the enduring impact of his leadership on tribal society.

Furthermore, the Social Welfare Officer briefed the audience on the significance of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, observed on November 15th each year, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. She outlined his role as a tribal freedom fighter, religious leader and folk hero who spearheaded the Munda Ulgulan movement against colonial rule. She also outlined the key objectives of celebrating Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.

As part of the observance, a rally was conducted to pay tribute to his contributions and a short video on his life and struggles was screened during the programme.

Additionally, a skit performance by students of Eklavya Model Residential School, Parakha, was presented at their school in honour of the occasion.
