A Day of Learning & Fun: Fisheries Awareness Initiative Held for Students in CMMS

Pakyong, April 17 : A Day of Learning & Fun: Fisheries Awareness Initiative for Students was organised by the Fisheries Department, Pakyong District, at Chief Minister’s Model School (CMMS), Assam Lingzey, today.

The programme was aimed at sensitising students to fisheries development, conservation of aquatic biodiversity and the adoption of sustainable practices. It focused on enhancing awareness of the ecological and economic importance of fisheries, the threats posed by pollution and unsafe fishing practices and the need for responsible management of aquatic resources.

Director of CMMS, Colonel Ujjwal Khatiwada, expressed appreciation to the Fisheries Department for organising the programme and for their contributions, including the provision of trout fish and an aquarium for the school. He encouraged students to actively participate, clarify their doubts and make the most of the learning opportunity. He also informed that the school is exploring the feasibility of establishing a fish tank and forming a fisheries club to promote experiential learning.

District Fisheries Development Officer (DFDO), Namchi, Mr Urgen Tseten Bhutia, delivered a presentation on the indigenous fish species of Sikkim, stating that 47 species are found in the state. He highlighted the factors contributing to their decline, including water pollution and harmful practices, which pose a serious threat to aquatic life.

DFDO, Gangtok, Mr Surendra Bhandari, delivered a presentation on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), explaining its general characteristics, lifespan, feeding habits, breeding patterns and culture techniques. He also elaborated on the nutritional value and health benefits of fish consumption. Further, he provided an overview of career opportunities in the fisheries sector, including roles such as scientist, fisheries officer and aquapreneur, along with the academic pathways required to pursue them.

At the outset, an aquarium demonstration featuring GloFish was conducted by fisheries officials, providing students with practical exposure to ornamental fish and aquarium management.

The programme also included a painting competition and a quiz competition, encouraging active participation and reinforcing learning through interactive activities.

The programme was attended by DFDO, Pakyong, Ms Gauri Mukhia; Assistant Director (HQ), Gangtok, Mr Naresh Sunar; Block Officer, Mr Yogesh Dangal, along with officials from the Fisheries Department, Pakyong and faculty members of CMMS.
