Mass Tea Plantation Drive Strengthens Green Vision and Rural Livelihoods in Rhenock Constituency

In a significant step towards promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, a Mass Tea Plantation Drive was successfully organised at Arangthang, Lower Pachak under the 19-Rhenock Assembly Constituency in Pakyong District. The initiative was undertaken through the dedicated efforts of the Tea Growers Society, Rhenock & Pachak, under the visionary guidance and continued support of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri Prem Singh Tamang-Golay.

The plantation programme symbolised the Government of Sikkim’s unwavering commitment to expanding tea cultivation, empowering rural communities, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities while preserving the state’s rich ecological heritage. The drive also highlighted the importance of community participation in achieving long-term environmental and economic development.

The event witnessed the gracious presence of Advisor to the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Bishnu Kumar Khatiwara, Chairman of Sikkim Housing Board Shri Karma Tashi Bhutia, APS to HCM Shri Bishal Pokhrel, OSD to the IT Department Shri Bum Tshering Yonzon, CA to HCM Shri Urgen Lepcha, Zilla Panchayat Shri Robin Tamang, Panchayat President Shri C.K. Giri, Youth Convener (Pakyong) Shri Angdup Yonzon, Panchayat members, Shri Dawa Sherpa, Assistant Director Shri Santaman Gurung, along with several government officials, public representatives, members of the Tea Growers Society, and enthusiastic local residents.

The large-scale plantation drive reflected a collective resolve to transform the region into a thriving tea-growing belt while encouraging environmentally responsible farming practices. Participants actively planted tea saplings and reaffirmed their commitment to conserving nature, improving agricultural productivity, and enhancing the socio-economic well-being of farming communities.

Speaking on the occasion, the dignitaries appreciated the active involvement of local people and stressed that such initiatives not only contribute to environmental protection but also create long-term income-generating opportunities for farmers. They reiterated that tea cultivation has immense potential to strengthen the rural economy and further establish Sikkim as a producer of high-quality, organic tea.

The successful programme stands as another milestone in the Government of Sikkim’s sustained efforts to promote green development, climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and community-led rural transformation, ensuring a prosperous and environmentally conscious future for the people of the state.
